Coalition on Richer Diversity (CORD) A Newfoundland & Labrador Diversity and Immigration Umbrella Organization The province of Newfoundland and Labrador has a minimal pool of human resources in the field of supporting the settlement and integration of newcomers because of the small size of its overall population and its relative inexperience with successfully carrying out such work. In response, at a meeting in September 2007, the Coalition on Richer Diversity CORD has been formed as an umbrella organization which enriches the community by bringing people together and being resource. It reaches out to organizations and groups that work with immigrants to collaborate, to offer networking opportunities, and to help them grow into more aware and diversity-sensitive organizations. CORD aims to maximize the human potential of provincial and local community not-for-profit and government services sectors to create more opportunities, assess needs, further develop services and ease the pressures on the system. Through research, education, outreach, advocacy, and mediation, the umbrella organization will work to identify what is being done, who is doing it, what needs to be done, and who can do it. CORD main activities are: (1) Clearinghouse for collection of information from member’s organizations and individuals as well as other sources, and dissemination of information through multimedia means as well as on request; (2) Solutions Groups, formed from interested organizations and individuals to look for ways to address specific issues on topics such as education, health, housing, justice, early childhood education, translation and interpretation, and so on; (3) Outreach Work to individuals and organization not yet involved with the Coalition; and (4) Research Projects, funded externally from the Coalition. |
